Homework

Homework is a regular part of St. Matthew Lutheran School’s academic program. The purpose of the homework policy is to help students, parents and teachers understand:

  1. why homework is assigned
  2. how much homework should be done

Rationale for Homework

Homework is an effective supplement to the regular instructional program.

  1. Homework is meant as a positive learning activity to help regular classroom work.
  2. Parents are encouraged to provide a positive work environment for the student.
  3. Homework is a necessary tool for:
  4. Preparation - to ready a student for classroom work.
  5. Practice - to repeat a concept until mastered.
  6. Extension of learning - an opportunity for enrichment study.
  7. Creativity - provides opportunity for additional reasoning and thinking skills.
  8. Completion of assignments that are given in class.

It is the responsibility of parents to see that students complete all homework assignments.

Amount of Homework

As a general rule of thumb, homework will be assigned on the basis of 10 minutes per year in school. The amount of homework brought home is often dependent on how wisely the student uses classroom time.

If parents are concerned, they are advised to contact the teacher to discuss the matter.
